Discover Union Station

The Crawford Hotel is proud to call Denver’s Union Station home.

Union Station began its life as just that — a rail center carrying travelers, trade and prosperity into downtown Denver. First opening in the 19th century, this titan of transit was often the first spot in the Mile-High City to be experienced by those traveling here. And it was an impressive sight indeed that greeted them. At the time of its opening in 1881, Union Station’s bold brick façade and soaring clock tower were the tallest structures west of the Mississippi River.

As the decades passed, countless voyagers crossed the platforms of Union Station — some coming to our burgeoning burg for a visit, but many more still seeking their fortune on the sweeping frontiers of Colorado. As the city rose up around it, Union Station remained an architectural testament to Denver’s proud, pioneering past, as well as its commitment to progress. And although the structure itself suffered some potentially catastrophic setbacks (most notably a severe fire in 1894), Union Station was simply too important to be held down for long — emerging from the ashes to assume its current Beaux-Arts form in 1914.    

Today, the spirit of Union Station is as strong as ever. This historic hub is home not just to The Crawford Hotel, but also to an exciting center of dining, shopping, and entertainment. It’s a de facto town hall for the entire region, drawing fun-seekers from across the metro and beyond.
